Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne viral zoonosis transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus, a member of the Phlebovirus genus, infects a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including cattle, sheep, goats and horses, where infection is characterised by high rates of abortion and neonatal mortality.
Endemic in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa and in Egypt, outbreaks of RVF occurred for the first time outside of Africa (Yemen and Saudi Arabia) in 2000, raising fears that the virus will emerge in new areas.
Seroneutralization is the prescribed serological test for international trade, but it may only be performed with live virus, raising biosecurity questions in non-endemic areas. The ELISA method does not pose such risks, and is therefore particularly suited to antibody surveillance in disease-free countries.
