Equine infectious anemia (EIA) is an infectious and potentially fatal viral disease caused by the equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), a lentivirus. EIA is considered a classic bloodborne infection, most frequently transmitted between horses in close proximity by large biting insects, such as horseflies and deerflies.
No vaccine or treatment exists, but serology may be used to diagnose the disease.
The ID ScreenŽ Equine Infectious Anemia Indirect ELISA kit is an easy-to-use, reliable tool for the detection of anti-EIAV antibodies in equine sera. It makes use of the presence of two Fab (on IgG) or ten Fab (on IgM) to allow for the early detection of anti-EIAV antibodies. A first Fab binds the immunoglobulins to the microplate and the other Fab binds a peroxydase antigen used as conjugate. This method is particularly suitable for the detection of IgM and IgG antibodies and therefore allows earlier testing of animals as well as long-term disease surveillance.
